Emerging Superstar - Cabernet Franc
Most people do not know that Cabernet Franc is a genetic parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. The other parent is Sauvignon Blanc. It is lighter, brighter and less tannic. Winemakers describe it with such terms as “elegant”, “finesse”, and “charming”.
The most recent issue of the prestigious British wine magazine “Decanter” had a feature article on “Cabernet Franc: The next big thing.”
Cabernet Franc is grown worldwide. In Bordeaux, France it is used in blends along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. In the Loire Valley, France (in Chinon and other appellations) it is the principal red grape.
Cabernet Franc is important in red wine blends, contributing acidity and fresh aromas. It also adds mid-palate tannins.
In Argentina expert ratings and recommendations for cabernet franc have both been rising.
More Cabernet Franc is being planted in Argentina. In 2014 there were only 698 hectares of cabernet franc planted in Argentina, almost all in Mendoza. A hectare is about 2.4 acres. In contrast there were 102,000 hectares of Malbec, Argentina’s signature grape. However new plantings are accelerating.
Cabernet Franc from high altitudes (like in our vineyards) produces freshness and herbal notes that are terrific.
