What is Super Tuscan wine?
Super Tuscan is a term used to describe a category of high-quality wines produced in Tuscany, Italy. The term originated in the 1970s and was primarily associated with non-traditional, innovative wines that did not adhere to the strict regulations of the Italian wine classification system.
In Italy, wines are classified and regulated under the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) systems. These systems dictate the grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and geographic regions that can be used for specific wines. However, during the 1960s and 1970s, a group of Tuscan winemakers began to experiment with international grape varieties and modern winemaking techniques, deviating from the traditional regional styles.
These winemakers used grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, which were not authorized by the local wine regulations. Consequently, their wines were classified as vino da tavola, the lowest category of Italian wine. Despite the classification, these wines gained recognition for their exceptional quality and began to attract international attention.
To market and distinguish their wines from the lower-quality table wines, these innovative producers used the term "Super Tuscan" to describe their wines. The name "Super Tuscan" was coined by the influential wine critic Robert Parker, who praised their quality and called them "Supertuscans" in his reviews.
Super Tuscans challenged the established traditions of Tuscan winemaking and demonstrated that outstanding wines could be produced outside the confines of the official classifications. They showcased the potential of Tuscan terroir combined with international grape varieties and modern winemaking techniques.
As a result of their success, the Italian wine authorities eventually recognized the value and market demand for these wines. In 1992, the creation of the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) classification provided a legal framework for the production of non-traditional wines. This classification allowed winemakers more freedom in their choice of grape varieties and winemaking techniques while still specifying a geographic origin.
Today, Super Tuscans continue to be celebrated for their quality and are among the most prestigious and sought-after wines in Italy. They played a crucial role in revolutionizing the perception of Italian wines on the international stage and helped Tuscany become recognized as a world-class wine region.
